Let's Talk About Mental Health

Mental health is the foundation on which individual human wellbeing is built. It allows us to face the challenges of daily life and gives us the ability to perform intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. However, in most societies it is seen under the disease paradigm, that is, it considers that mental health exists if there are no symptoms of the disease.

However, mental health is not black and white, it is a dynamic and changing concept. All people in the course of their life go through various degrees of health, according to the internal or external circumstances. Most people fall into a gap between full health and pathology. The paradigm of disease results in few programs focused on positive health promotion, which has very severe effects on both people and society. If people are not familiar with this fundamental aspect of health, it is impossible for them to take care of it. In the best-case scenario, they limit to treating the disease if it does occur, although the vast majority of them are not treated due to lack of knowledge. The positive dimension of mental health has been underlined several times, including by the World Health Organization, for its great importance for societies. Even so, health systems focus on the treatment of pathology and clinical symptoms, usually not addressing the factors that could have caused the loss of health. Although traditional pharmacological treatments can help reduce symptoms, it is difficult to eliminate mental disorders. Today, the traditional pharmacological approach alone is far from having optimal results.
